About Sigma Squared
Sigma Squared is a Series A start-up on a mission to take the guesswork out of talent decisions. We believe that workplaces should be meritocratic and by optimizing decisions around talent (hiring, promotion, compensation, etc.), companies can unlock their workforce performance potential. Together, Roland Fryer and Tanaya Devi translated what social scientists know about bias in the workplace into a set of mathematical frameworks. Combining these with applied econometrics and machine learning, they launched the first version of the Sigma Squared software with a set of global customers. The product has since expanded to service companies beyond Enterprise HR by aiding restaurants in identifying the best talent to hire and law enforcement agencies in analyzing stop data.
The intelligence product tests whether talent decisions related to core areas of their business are efficient, or contain bias. Sigma Squared also integrates with Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) and Human Resource Information Systems (HRIS) to supercharge talent workflows, making the world of managing talent easier and fairer.
Opportunity Overview:
Sigma Squared is looking for an experienced Product Designer to join the Product Design Team.
As a Product Designer, you will partner with our design director, engineers, data scientists, and founders to add onto a suite of tools used by our customers to understand their organization’s people processes and manage talent on our web platform. You will also design to support integrations of our analysis back into their systems to power their workflows.
Who you are
Product Designers at Sigma Squared are expert individual contributors; they’re given a lot of autonomy and trust to work on our most impactful design projects. For this specific role, we’re looking for someone who values the following:
Shaping: Defining great products and experiences with a point of view, where good defaults and what not to include is as intentional and essential as what makes it into the final solution.
Systems thinking: This role requires a designer who can think systemically when it comes to information architecture as well as existing and emerging UX/UI patterns.
Tempo: It’s easy to get caught up in the meta-design details, so our team must be mindful that we keep making decisions and move forward quickly. We prioritize progress over perfection and celebrate a “fail fast and iterate” mentality.
Curiosity: With ever evolving technology like AI and LLMs, our designers remain curious and comfortable learning about existing and upcoming capabilities to identify opportunities.
Humble rockstar: We are a team of egoless designers who care deeply about our craft. We understand good design takes a team and consider all ideas, opinions, and perspectives, no matter where they come from.
How you will contribute
Problem Definition: From idea to concept, you will play the crucial part of defining what a feature is, needs, and solves for our customers.
Ideate: You will own key features and have autonomy over designing the best customer experience. You will communicate and ask questions proactively to unblock yourself. Explore and shape solutions for existing and new experiences based on new and upcoming technological capabilities while also balancing inevitable constraints.
Design Quality: You will design responsive and accessible experiences that work on desktop web and across mobile as our product scales.
Communication: You will guide communication with cross-disciplinary teams through all stages of ideation, design, and development. As a designer, you are the conduit of information and a customer advocate.
Collaboration: You will build meaningful relationships across the product, engineering, and other partners you’re working with. Your role connects the dots between teams to enable collaboration, identifying opportunities to build on the work of others and leverage previous work.
User Research: You will strategize, design and conduct just enough user research with customers and user personas for feature design direction and validation.
Required Qualifications:
5+ years of experience as a Product Designer working with Engineers, Product Managers, and other Designers
Experience shipping products or features end-to-end and presenting your work to a variety of audiences
Experience designing projects that work across mobile and desktop and applying UX principles, user research methods, and a user-centric approach to product design.
Portfolio showcasing your involvement in projects, highlighting your hands-on experience as a product designer
Experience using and contributing to an established design system
